Eccellenza Fashion Showcase Brings Italian Artisans to Delhi
The Italian Trade Agency is taking “Eccellenza: The Artisans of Italian Style” to Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI on 17 October, with three Italian labels and the artisan body Confartigianato
The Italian Trade Agency (ITA) is bringing a special designer showcase to Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI in Delhi this October. Called “Eccellenza: The Artisans of Italian Style”, it is scheduled for 17 October 2026 at 12 noon, and the Eccellenza fashion showcase is a joint effort of the Italian Trade Agency, Confartigianato and the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). The idea is to put Italian craftsmanship and contemporary design in front of one of India’s most influential fashion audiences.
The Italian labels expected to show are Avant Toi, Unbreak and Leodean.
It is more than one more international name on a fashion-week schedule. The showcase points to the growing exchange between India and Italy, two countries with deep traditions in craft, textiles, luxury, design and artisanal production.
More Than a Runway
“Made in Italy” has a reputation that took generations to build: precision, good materials, tailoring, and a knack for mixing heritage with contemporary design. Eccellenza brings that idea to Delhi, but the focus is less on garments as runway pieces and more on the people and techniques behind them. That fits the current mood among buyers, who increasingly look past logos and care about craftsmanship, where a product comes from, sustainability and the story behind it.
India has its own rich craft vocabulary, from hand embroidery and weaving to couture techniques refined over centuries. Italian fashion built its global name through specialised artisan districts, premium materials, tailoring and design-led manufacturing. Putting the two on one platform invites a real exchange.
The Italian Trade Agency and Its India Plans
The Italian Trade Agency is the Italian government body that helps Italian companies expand abroad and promotes the country’s economic and commercial strengths. Its work goes well beyond fashion. Through its international network it helps businesses spot opportunities, build commercial relationships and find partners in overseas markets.
India is becoming a more important market in that plan. The Indian fashion and luxury market is changing, helped by a growing affluent consumer base, shifting retail patterns, more international exposure and a stronger appetite for premium, distinctive products. For Italian brands and artisan businesses, India is not just a place to sell. It is a platform for long-term commercial and cultural ties, and Eccellenza places that opportunity inside one of the country’s most visible fashion events.
Why Delhi
Delhi has always held a special place in Indian fashion. Designers, luxury retailers, diplomats, business leaders, fashion media, buyers, stylists, cultural institutions and a sophisticated consumer audience all sit in the same city, and its closeness to India’s traditional craft clusters gives it a natural link to artisanal fashion. Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI returning to Delhi suits an initiative built around craft and international collaboration.
The October edition has a global feel. The schedule includes FDCI x Moscow Fashion Week, featuring Russian designer Sergey Sysoev, and The Fifth Season, which highlights Ladakh’s regional craftsmanship and creative heritage. Eccellenza adds Italy to that mix. Taken together, these shows suggest that Indian fashion weeks are turning into platforms for cultural exchange, business development and creative diplomacy, not just runway presentations.

Italian Labels at the Showcase
The three labels bring a contemporary Italian perspective to the showcase. For a label entering a new market, a fashion week offers something advertising can’t easily match: direct contact with the fashion community. A runway lets designers show not only what they make but how they think.
Indian audiences may pick up new ideas about silhouette, material, construction, colour, texture and styling. For the Italian labels, Delhi is a chance to understand a market whose fashion identity is increasingly global but still tied to its own heritage. That two-way exchange is probably the most valuable part of Eccellenza.
When Indian and Italian Craft Meet
The two fashion cultures have more in common than you might expect. Both have long traditions of artisanal production, both value skilled work, and in both, heritage and contemporary design keep overlapping. Their creative languages differ, though. Indian fashion often leans on embroidery, ornamentation, handcrafted textiles, regional techniques and richly developed surfaces. Italian design has tended to build its identity around construction, tailoring, material quality, understated sophistication and technical skill.
When the two meet, it doesn’t have to be a contest between systems. It can be a conversation, and that kind of cross-border conversation is becoming a real driver of creativity across the global industry.
A New Chapter in India–Italy Fashion Relations
Eccellenza arrives as India strengthens its position on the international fashion and luxury map. Indian designers are showing abroad more often, Indian consumers have more exposure to global luxury brands, and international houses are paying closer attention to India’s cultural influence and commercial potential. Italy, with its globally recognised fashion ecosystem, is a natural partner.
Confartigianato’s involvement is worth noting. The organisation represents Italy’s wide network of artisans and small businesses, so its presence shifts attention from the big luxury houses to the smaller workshops and skilled makers that form much of Italy’s creative economy. That is where the word “Eccellenza” earns its meaning. Excellence in fashion doesn’t come only from celebrity designers or large brands. It also comes from workshops and studios where skills are handed down from one generation to the next.
Fashion as Cultural Diplomacy
Fashion increasingly works as a quiet form of cultural diplomacy. A runway can introduce a country’s aesthetic to an international audience without a formal diplomatic setting, and it gets people from different industries and cultures into the same room over a shared interest in creativity.
So Eccellenza matters beyond the fashion pages. It brings together design, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, international trade and cultural exchange, five areas that overlap more and more in the global creative economy. For India, it is a chance to engage with Italian craftsmanship at home. For Italy, it is a platform to present its creative identity to one of the world’s fastest-changing fashion markets.
The Bigger Picture for Indian Fashion
The real value of collaborations like Eccellenza lies in lasting relationships, not one-day spectacle. A runway lasts a few minutes, but the contacts made around it can last years. Designers find new markets, buyers spot new labels, media introduce unfamiliar voices to wider audiences, institutions explore future projects, and young designers see international possibilities for their own work. That is how fashion ecosystems grow.
The October edition of Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI reflects this wider shift. Alongside established designers and commercial showcases, the calendar includes emerging talent, sustainability initiatives, regional craftsmanship and international collaborations, and the programme has been positioned as a meeting point for established names, new designers and varied creative perspectives. Eccellenza fits right into that.
Delhi Gets a Taste of Italian Style
For anyone interested in fashion, craftsmanship and international business, “Eccellenza: The Artisans of Italian Style” is one of the shows to watch as the capital’s fashion week gets under way. Its real impact may not show in the applause at the end of the runway. It will show in what happens afterwards. Can Italian artisan brands find new audiences in India? Can Indian designers and businesses build deeper ties with their Italian counterparts? Can craft become a stronger bridge between the two industries? Those questions are what make Eccellenza more than another international presentation.
On 17 October 2026, Delhi provides the stage. Italy brings its artisanship, design philosophy and creative expression, and Indian fashion brings an audience that knows better than most that behind every exceptional garment there is more than a designer: there is a story, a skill and a tradition.
