The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) presented a new, modern, and youthful avatar of Khadi—titled “Navdhara Khadi”—at Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI. This presentation not only reflects the timeless relevance of Khadi, but also gives it a new direction by linking it with contemporary fashion, sustainability, and innovation. At this special fashion show held at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, the country’s leading designers presented Khadi as a trendy, stylish, and global fabric. The event was organised in collaboration with the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI).

“Navdhara Khadi” is not merely a fashion presentation, but an idea—where Bapu’s legacy meets the energy of a modern India shaped by the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. It makes Khadi not just a tradition, but the fabric of the future. Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, KVIC Chairman Shri Manoj Kumar said that the message of Swadeshi and self-reliance given by Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom struggle is today moving forward with renewed energy under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister’s mantra—“Khadi for Nation, Khadi for Fashion, and Khadi for Transformation”—is today taking shape in the form of “Navdhara Khadi.” He further said that today’s youth are embracing Khadi not merely as a tradition, but as sustainable, stylish, and responsible fashion. This shift is placing Khadi on the global fashion map.

From his “Mann Ki Baat” broadcasts to international platforms, the Prime Minister has consistently highlighted the significance of Khadi. His statement that “when you buy Khadi, it is not merely a garment, but a means to empower the lives of millions of people” is now becoming a reality.

Over the past few years, the Khadi and Village Industries sector has achieved unprecedented progress. The sector’s turnover has surpassed 1.70 lakh crore, providing employment to over 2 crore people. At the same time, there has been a remarkable increase in the income of artisans, taking their standard of living, self-confidence, and dignity to new heights.

Speaking on this occasion Ms Roop Rashi, CEO KVIC said ‘ Navyug khadi is dream come true of development by means of Swadeshi and modern khadi’ with focus on youth.

In the collection presented at Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI, prominent designers such as Samant Chauhan, COEK-Khadi India, Pawan Sachdeva, and Shruti Sancheti showcased Khadi with modernity, fine craftsmanship, and global appeal through their innovative design perspectives. “Navdhara Khadi” symbolises how Bapu’s charkha-based philosophy is becoming an integral part of the fashion and sustainable lifestyle of today’s young India—this is the powerful journey from tradition to progress.
